Sterling Pacific 40L Carry-On Review: Premium Aluminum Luggage Built for A Lifetime

If you’ve heard of Sterling Pacific before you might already have an idea of how this review is going to go. This is our second piece from Sterling Pacific. These are expensive but absolutely amazing suitcases. And man do they look good.
Most luggage blends together and kind of looks the same honestly. The Sterling Pacific 40L Carry-On does the opposite. It asks you to enjoy the journey, notice the details, and treat travel as something intentional. This is not a bag chasing trends or shaving grams for marketing sake. It feels engineered for people who value durability, tactility, and heritage.
From the moment you handle it, there’s a sense that this bag was designed by people who care deeply about how things age, not just how they look on day one. Which is exactly what I want to feel with an investment.
Wheels & handling
Rolling this bag feels smooth and controlled. The wheels track straight, stay stable when fully loaded, and don’t chatter or wobble on imperfect floors. It doesn’t feel like it’s dragging behind you or trying to overcorrect. You guide it; it follows.
The trolly handle is also very tactile. It retracts smoothly and has extremely minimal wobble. The leather wrapping on the grip makes it feel that much more luxurious as well.
Size & Interior layout
The Sterling Pacific 40L measures 22.5 × 14 × 9 inches, which technically puts it just a half-inch taller than the commonly accepted carry-on standard of 22 × 14 × 9 inches. That’s something I was aware of going in, especially since aluminum bags don’t compress the way soft luggage does.
In practice, though, it hasn’t been an issue. I haven’t had to gate check this bag on any of my trips, and it’s fit into overhead bins without issue.
Still, the dimensions are close enough to the limit that I keep them in mind when I travel. If you’re frequently flying smaller regional aircraft or airlines known for strict enforcement, it’s worth being aware of. For most standard domestic flights, though, it’s been a non-issue for me. Even flights heading overseas the size hasn’t been an issue just make sure to check sizing prior to your flights.
The 40L capacity is super generous, with plenty of room for clothes. The clamshell opening makes packing straightforward, and the internal layout encourages organization without forcing it. Compression straps keep clothing in place, and the zippered divider gives you structure without stealing usable space.
This is a bag that works well for travelers who pack intentionally. It rewards thoughtful packing instead of trying to compensate with endless pockets.
Build & materials
The aluminum shell feels unapologetically solid. It has the kind of density that immediately communicates strength. You don’t wonder how it will hold up after a rough overhead bin or an awkward gate check. You assume it will.
The riveted construction and reinforced corners give it a utilitarian, almost industrial look, but it’s balanced by subtle refinement. This isn’t “luxury” in the shiny, attention-seeking sense. It’s quiet confidence. The kind that doesn’t need branding splashed across the surface to prove its value.
The leather handles are worth calling out. They’re incredibly comfortable, substantial, and improve the experience every time you lift the bag. It’s a small thing, but it’s the kind of small thing that separates good gear from forgettable gear.

This is not an ultralight carry-on. Coming in at 12lbs, the aluminum shell adds real weight before you pack anything, and that’s the clearest tradeoff. If you frequently fly airlines with strict carry-on weight limits, you’ll need to pack with awareness.
