Sterling Pacific 40 Liter Aluminum Luggage: Full Review

Sterling Pacific 40L Carry-on with the trolly handle extended

A carry-on that treats travel like an Experience, not a convenience

If you’ve heard of Sterling Pacific before, you probably already sense where this review is headed. This is our second piece from them, and yes, these suitcases are expensive. They are also, exceptional. And man, do they look good

Most luggage today honestly looks the same. Same shapes, same finishes, same cheap plastic feeling. The Sterling Pacific 40L Carry-On does the opposite. It stands out, and not in a flashy or loud way, just unmistakably different in a striking way.

I have a deep appreciation for thoughtful design, and am a firm believer in buying one truly great thing instead of replacing something mediocre over and over. I think that mindset came from my grandfather. He lived by it. Rather than buying cheap shoes every year, I mostly wear Red Wings or Danner Heritage boots, just like he did. Instead of jeans from the mall with a short lifespan, I bought raw denim in Japan years ago and never looked back. These things cost more upfront, but I’ve had them for years. They’ve softened, molded, and improved over time. I still love using them, and there’s a quiet pride that comes with that. You don’t get that feeling from something purchased with the expectation that it will eventually fail. And beyond that, it’s a deeply wasteful way to think about the things we bring into our lives.

That’s exactly how this luggage feels to me. The Sterling Pacific 40L carry-on doesn’t feel disposable or temporary. It feels like a heritage piece. Something chosen carefully, lived with fully, and kept for the long haul. Honestly, it feels like it might outlast me.

It feels engineered for people who care about durability, tactility, and how things age over time. From the moment you first pick it up, there’s a sense that it was designed by people who think beyond day one, they care about year ten. That’s exactly the feeling I want when I make an investment, and it’s the feeling Sterling Pacific delivers in spades.

Wheels & handling

Wheels are almost always the first thing to break on spinner wheel luggage like this. So high quality wheels is a must. Especially if you’re planning to keep your luggage for decades. One thing I absolutely love that Sterling Pacific did was make these wheels replaceable. All you need is an Alan key and about 1 minute and you can swap out a wheel for a brand new one. No need to throw out the whole case due to a broken wheel like with a lot of other luggage.

That’s not to say you’ll need to do that maybe ever. These wheels are great! I love rolling this luggage around the airport. The wheels are smooth and track straight. They don’t pull to one side or make you feel like you’re dragging you bag. Even fully loaded they roll the same way, which is impressive.

The trolly handle is also the best I’ve used in any luggage. It retracts smoothly and has very minimal wobble even when fully extended. The handle itself feels like it’s made of a solid piece of aluminum wrapped in leather. The button and the clicks are also extremely tactile.

Size & Interior layout

The Sterling Pacific 40L measures 22.5 × 14 × 9 inches, which on paper puts it just a half-inch taller than the commonly accepted carry-on standard of 22 × 14 × 9 inches. I been reading some peoples concerns about this online and Sterling Pacific’s response to them. They make it clear that their intentions were to maximize usable space for the traveler. They state they used the exact luggage sizer boxes that most domestic airlines use while designing this bag to make sure that it would still fit.

Some luggage size restrictions include wheels and handles and some don’t. It’s all a little confusing. I wish every airline had the same requirements. In practice, though, it hasn’t been an issue. I haven’t had to gate check this bag on any of my trips, and it’s fit into overhead bins without issue. Sterling Pacific suggested that if you are having some trouble fitting your bag into the overhead bin to make sure the handles are collapsed in and perhaps even try wheels facing outwards. I haven’t had to do this but it’s a good suggestion for any larger carryon.

Still, the dimensions should be kept in mind when traveling. If you’re frequently flying smaller regional aircraft or airlines known for strict enforcement, it’s worth being aware of. For most standard domestic flights, though, it’s been a non-issue for me. Even flights heading overseas the size hasn’t been an issue just make sure to check sizing prior to your flights.

The 40L capacity is super generous, with plenty of room for clothes. The clamshell opening makes packing straightforward, and the internal layout encourages organization without forcing it. Compression straps keep clothing in place, and the zippered divider gives you structure without stealing usable space.

This is a bag that works well for travelers who pack intentionally. It rewards thoughtful packing instead of trying to compensate with endless pockets.

Build Quality & materials

Sterling Pacific 40L Carry-On Aluminum Suitcase

This is the section Sterling Pacific just blows other brands out of the water. The 5000 series aluminum shell feels unapologetically solid. The corners are reinforced with a second layer of 1.5mm thick 5052 aluminum. Everything is held together with SAE 304 steel rivets. All attached to the extruded 6063 aluminum frame. All these specs to say yeah, this thing is built like a tank and looks like a piece of design art.

The riveted construction and reinforced corners give it a utilitarian, almost industrial look, but it’s balanced by subtle refinement. This isn’t “luxury” in the shiny, attention-seeking sense. It’s quiet confidence. The kind that doesn’t need branding splashed across the surface to prove its value.

The Italian full-grain leather handles are worth calling out. They’re incredibly comfortable, substantial, and improve the experience every time you lift the bag. It’s a small thing, but it’s the kind of small thing that separates good gear from forgettable gear.

Sterling Pacific also includes a lifetime warranty & repair service with their luggage which makes the price tag make a bit more sense. This really is luggage that you can keep for decades. Even if you tear a handle or rip a zipper inside no worries. Just reach out to them and that lifetime warranty will take care of you and get you travel ready again.

Weight & tradeoffs

This is not an ultralight carry-on, coming in at 12lbs. All that aluminum and leather adds real weight before you pack anything, and that’s the clearest tradeoff. If you frequently fly airlines with strict carry-on weight limits, you’ll need to pack with awareness.

But that weight isn’t wasted. It translates directly into durability, rigidity, and long-term resilience. This is a bag built to be used hard, not replaced often. Lightweight items pretty much always come at the cost of durability.

Who this Carry-On is for

The Sterling Pacific 40L makes the most sense for travelers who:

  • Prefer fewer, better-made things rather than constant upgrades.

  • Appreciate gear that develops character over time & who won’t mind the inevitable scratches and dents that come with aluminum luggage.

  • Mostly travel on major US airlines. (Due to dimensions)

  • Prefer a simple interior bag layout.

If you want a lightweight, tech-packed, or inexpensive in the short term carry-on this isn’t your kind of luggage. If you’re looking for a premium aluminum carry-on that prioritizes durability over weight, the Sterling Pacific 40L stands out as a long-term investment rather than a disposable travel accessory.
